Study abroad with Queen Mary
Spending a year abroad during your studies is an enriching and exciting way to broaden your experience and perspective.
We want all of our students to be able to enjoy the international opportunities we offer. You can count on the Global Opportunities Office in coordination with the Disability & Dyslexia Service to help you consider which opportunity could be the best fit for you if you wish to participate.
There are several opportunities for students at Queen Mary who are interested in taking some time abroad during their degrees, from summer schools to semester and year-long exchanges. We encourage all of our students to develop a global perspective and each year they travel as far afield as Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australasia.
Before you submit an application to Global Opportunities, the Disability and Dyslexia Service can help you plan ahead by considering together what support (accommodations or adjustments) you would need for potential destinations and then by assessing what a host institution would need to arrange for you.
We hope that you consider applying for one of these opportunities and look forward to hearing from you soon!
Exchange programmes: Erasmus+ Programme and International Exchange Programme
These exciting opportunities enable students from Queen Mary to spend either the autumn semester or a full academic year at one of our partner institutions. Completing an academic exchange abroad is an integral part of your degree, as academic work completed abroad counts towards your degree. However, you will need to agree upon your programme with your Study Abroad coordinator beforehand.
If you are on a three-year degree, an exchange takes place in your second year, and applications open in the first semester of the first year at Queen Mary. Therefore, it is good to get in touch with your school’s Study Abroad Coordinator as early as possible.
Where a degree programme is also available as a four-year version, this means you spend a full year (your third year) abroad on exchange. These options are available to apply for directly through UCAS. Students going abroad also benefit from a significant tuition fee reduction if they complete a full year abroad.
Through the International Exchange Programme, we have links with prestigious institutions around the world in North America, Oceania and Asia.
The Erasmus+ Programme is an EU-funded exchange programme, which aims to boost the skills and employability of students by offering a semester or year abroad at a partner university within Europe. Students participating in Erasmus+ exchanges are eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, and students with special needs accommodations are eligible for additional support.
Partner Summer School Programme
Every year, Queen Mary works with its partner universities across the globe to design and promote international experiences for our students during the summer. All the programmes are different, concentrating on academic study, language learning, work with local communities, cultural immersion, or a combination of all these elements. Currently there are opportunities to spend a few weeks with our partner universities in Latin America,
China or India, and the list is growing. This placement does not count towards your degree but is a valuable cultural experience.
