Specialist 1:1 Support

On this page you will find information about specialist 1:1 support provided by the Disability and Dyslexia Service (DDS).

Specialist One to One Study Skills Support sessions are individual, personalised support sessions for students with dyslexia, dyspraxia or other SpLDs.  The sessions are with specialist tutors who are qualified in teaching students with specific learning difficulties.

For UK students, these sessions are funded through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) which can also provide specialist equipment, assistive software and other allowances (agreed on a case-by-case basis).  International students are funded by DDS.

What will your sessions cover?

Specialist One to One Study Skills Support is aimed at making you a more independent learner, helping you to develop skills to enable you to work more efficiently and effectively. During the sessions the tutor will help you to identify your strengths, using strategies based upon them to enable you to improve your areas of difficulty.

Topics covered during the sessions may include:

  • Learning styles
  • Time management/organisation
  • Reading strategies such as “How to Proofread – The 7 Strategies”
  • Improving research techniques
  • Structuring assignments and/or presentations
  • Essay planning
  • Examination and Revision strategies
  • Presentation skills
  • Memory techniques

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required will vary on a student-by-student basis. The aim of the sessions is to assist you in reaching your goals.  Therefore, you will work closely with the tutor to establish an appropriate timescale.  You would normally receive no more than 1 session per week (1 hour), or 30 hours each academic year.  Your Study Needs Assessment may contain recommendations regarding number of sessions, and suggested topics to be covered.
